Unlike iodine solutions, it is non-sensitizing, and does not cause pain when applied to wounds or mucous membranes. PVP-iodine forms films that protect open wounds. These films can be washed with water, and will not permanently stain skin, natural fibers or hard surfaces. It is easy to use because it is soluble in water as well as in organic solvents, such as alcohols. PVP-iodine can be used in powders, tablets, solutions, lotions, ointments, creams or sprays. Crospovidone is a synthetic, insoluble but rapidly swellable homopolymer of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone.
